Tyres

old tyre in waterAround 40 million tyres are disposed of in the UK every year, and around 80% of these are recycled. Don’t just dump tyres, they should be returned to a member of the Responsible Recycling Scheme, or your local household recycling site, so they can be turned into a whole range of useful products.

Tyres can be eco-friendly in a number of ways:

  • Goodyear’s GT3 tyre releases less polyaromatic hydrocarbons into the atmosphere as the tyre wears.

  • Tyres with a low rolling resistance give you fuel savings from 0.1-2%.

  • “Quiet tyres” produce less noise – which can be a major cause of aggravation/ pollution if you happen to live close to a major road.

  • Retread tyres require only half the energy to manufacture than brand new tyres. Retreads are still considered by many people as second rate, despite having rigorous quality standards.
