Recycling Polystyrene
Save a Cup have already recycled over a billion polystyrene cups. They collect cups using their Beca Bins, usually to be found next to office coffee machines. They do not however recycle expanded polystyrene cups.
The difference is easy to spot: polystyrene cups are smooth, thin walled, either white, clear or coloured, and are fairly rigid - they crack easily. Expanded polystyrene cups, and known as styrofoam, are white, thick, and forme dof compressed "beads" (see left). Contrary to popular belief, expanded polystyrene can be recycled: it can be granulated and re-formed into new shapes, for example for use as packaging, or it can be compacted into “bricks”.
