Recycling Mobile Phones
Mobile phones contain valuable materials such as silver, and toxic materials such as cadmium. It is estimated that there are over 90 million old mobiles sitting unused in desks and drawers around the UK. There are plenty of people willing to take your old phone off you.
Oxfam have raised a lot of money with their ‘bring bring’ phone recycling scheme. You can send it to them by FREEPOST, ask for some recycling bags, or just take your old phone to any Oxfam shop.

Greener Solutions are a company specialising in reusing and recycling mobiles and inkjet cartridges. Their Mobile2cash scheme allows you turn your old phone into cash. They also take donated phones via envolopes you can collect at a number of retailers including Tesco, T Mobile, Argos, Vodaphone, Comet and Body Shop.
If you are sending a phone for recycling remember:
-
include the battery and charger - this adds to the re-sale value of the phone, and makes it more usable
-
make sure there is no outstanding contract on the phone
-
if you are posting it, pad it well to make sure it doesn't get broken
