Glass is in theory infinitely recyclable. it makes up around 8% of our rubbish, ye currently only around 35% of glass is recycled in the UK, compared to 80-90% in the rest of Europe. 587,000 tonnes were recycled in the UK in 2001. Glass banks are to be found in every town and city, often in supermarket car parks.
- Make sure you separate glass by colour (brown, clear, green)
- Blue glass should be put with green.
- Wash the glass before placing it in the bank.
- Never put Pyrex, window glass or light bulbs in with your bottles
Recycle More allow you to input your postcode and find your nearest recycling facilities.
This symbol indicates that glass can be recycled (although, in fact, just about all glass can be recycled).
Glass that is not made into new bottles can be used for:
- making sandpaper
- sandblasting
- water filtration
- a soil-less growing medium
- worktops
- concrete additive
