Recycling Glass

glass recycling binsGlass is in theory infinitely recyclable. it makes up around 8% of our rubbish, ye currently only around 35% of glass is recycled in the UK, compared to 80-90% in the rest of Europe. 587,000 tonnes were recycled in the UK in 2001. Glass banks are to be found in every town and city, often in supermarket car parks.

  • Make sure you separate glass by colour (brown, clear, green)
  • Blue glass should be put with green.
  • Wash the glass before placing it in the bank.
  • Never put Pyrex, window glass or light bulbs in with your bottles

Glass that is not made into new bottles can be used for:

  • making sandpaper
  • sandblasting
  • water filtration
  • a soil-less growing medium
  • worktops
  • concrete additive
and lots and lots of other uses.
