Rercalimed timber can add a lot of character to your home. Tips for choosing and using reclaimed timber:
- You may have to work around the sizes of timber you can get hold of, and change your design to suit – you see, it adds character!
- Check the timber is structurally sound. If you are buying from a supplier, then they should declare the suitability of the timber for use. If not, ask!
- You get what you pay for (generally, hopefully)
- Painted wood is a warning sign – check it. The wood underneath may be damaged, contaminated, and the paint itself (especially if old) may contain toxins
- Creosote is toxic – avoid it
- Don’t use reclaimed timber for food preparation areas
