Pets
Choose your pets carefully: can you give a cat or dog from a rescue centre a home? For a centre near you, try:
Is the exotic pet you are thinking of buying an endangered species? Has it been cruelly or illegally transported (trafficked) from its native environment? Is there a danger of releasing the animal into our environment, where it might unbalance natural animal populations? Could it have brought disease into the country? Can you provide a suitable environment for it?
Dog excrement can carry roundworm eggs, which can live for up to 2 years in soil, then transfer to the human body where they can cause damage to the lungs, liver and eyes. Scoop it up and dispose of it properly.
Buy dried food rather than tinned. The production and recycling of tin cans (aluminium) uses a lot of energy – dried food comes in more easily recyclable packaging.
You can buy biodegradable cat litter made from paper.
