Pest Control Without Chemicals

Ants

Trap ants on sticky paper, or bread spread with honey. Pour boiling water on the nest.

Fleas

Feeding pets with vitamin B and garlic is said to reduce the likelihood of fleas (as well as the likelihood of you wanting to kiss your pet).

Earwigs

Introduce a toad or two – they can eat thousands of earwigs each year.

Aphids

Spray the affected plants with soapy water.

Introduce ladybirds and hoverflies (which like plants with accessible pollen like Californian poppies) into your garden – they love aphids!.

Aphids don’t like the smell of marigolds – plant some near the crop you want to protect.

Mosquitos

Spray citronella (or use a candle), or put basil or garlic in the area

Slugs and Snails

They have tender bellies – a rough rope, or crushed shells, will deter them. Slugs are also reportedly not very keen on coffee. They also dislike pine needles.

Note though: the European black slug will eat dog and cat faeces.

Some species of beetle, and centipedes, eat slugs. Encourage them with a rockery of woodpile.

Moles

Stick a clove or two of garlic down the middle of the molehill

There are also various naturally based insect sprays available.
