Here are some easy ways to save energy in the kitchen:
- put lids on pans when cooking to reduce electricity consumption
- use the correct hob or ring according to the size of the pan
- turn the gas flame down - if it is licking round the sides of the pan it is too high - the tip of the flame should touch the bottom of the pan
- use a multi-layered steamer to cook many items at once
- if using the oven, think what else you could use it for at the same time
- pressure cookers speed up cooking time, and so use less energy
- clean hobs and rings are more energy efficient
- when cooking pasta, put the heat on for the first two minutes only, then turn it off - the pasta will be cooked after the normal time
- keep your kettle free of limescale. To clean it, soak overnight in vinegar
- check the door seal on your fridge regularly. If frost is building up it is probably faulty
- never put warm food in the fridge or freezer
- don't site your fridge or freezer next to a radiator, oven or boiler
- defrost your fridge and freezer regularl
