On top of that you will arrive an work fully awake, alert, and refreshed. People who cycle regularly have the fitness of a person 10 years younger, and your life expectancy increases by 2 years if you carry on cycling once you’ve reached your mid-30s.

The safety record has improved dramatically over the last 15 years, at least in part due to the number of new cycle routes and trails that have been built by Sustrans and local authorities.

The amount of equipment you need depends on your enthusiasm level, but just make sure you buy a good helmet, are visible in the dark (lights and reflective materials), and carry a bike lock.

If your employer doesn’t provide cycle racks, or showers, or even somewhere to keep a change of clothes, then pester them to do so, and tell them about the Cycle to Work scheme.
