Computers

laptopIn terms of energy usage, laptops are around twice as efficient as desktop PCs. Your computer also uses power when switches off, so unplug it at the mains when not in use. Your peripherals also use power, not just the printer but the modem, wifi router, etc.

LCD monitors are more efficient than CRT, for the same screen size. See section on televisions for more details.

Many computers are manufactured by workers in poor conditions in countries such as China and Thailand. Gooshing has a list of PCs and laptops together with the ethical rating of their manufacturer.

Around 75% of the fossil fuel requirements of a PC are taken up during manufacture (as opposed to during its useful life). So to recycle the PC after only 3-4 years, as many businesses do, as very wasteful. These PCs may be below the spec required for the latest software, but they can be used by someone. See our section on Recycling computers and recycling printer and toner cartridges.

There is another good reason not to dump your PC or laptop. PCs contain a wide range of toxins, including

Hexavalent chromium – can cause DNA damage and asthmatic bronchitis

Beryllium – a carcinogen

Lead – affects kidneys and nervous and reproductive systems

Brominated flame retardants – possible endocrine disruptor

Cadmium – possible kidney damage

PVC

Mercury – causes brain damage

The WEEE directive now means that manufacturers have responsibility for safely disposing of their products.
