Christmas Trees

Christmas trees in a snowstormWe buy around 5.5 million Christmas trees each year. These trees are grown specifically for the purpose, and help take CO2 out of the atmosphere, which is clearly a good thing, depending on what you do with the tree after you’ve finished with it. Burning the tree just puts the CO2 back again.

  • buy a tree with roots, so you can plant it in the garden and use it year after year

  • take your tree to your council recycling centre – many councils have a scheme to turn trees into woodchips

Take care your tree is from a plantation that has taken care to look after the natural habitat, and not used excessive fertilisers and chemicals – make sure they are FSC certified.

If you buy an artificial tree, look after it and it will last many, many years.
