Chocolate
In countries such as Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria cocoa workers are typically children of under 4 years of age, many of whom have never been to school.
The big suppliers tend to buy their cocoa from these countries. Although conditions are improving, there are still major issues around child labour in cocoa production. Buying Fair Trade ensures you are buying from an ethical source.
Organic chocolate avoids problems with pesticide and fertiliser residues. However, cocoa trees are susceptible to disease, and to protect farmers livelihoods some ethical suppliers have decided to buy from non-organic sources.
Manufacturers recommended by the Ethical Company Organisation include Divine, Plamil and Traidcraft. Mars and Nestle are among the lowest ranking companies.
