Recycling Cat Litter

The majority of cat litter is made from bentonite clay, although it can also be made from other recycled/recyclable materials such as paper, hemp, wood shavings, wheat bran and orange peel. All these types can be added to the compost heap, although it is best to remove the faeces first to avoid spreading parasites.
It is not recommended that silica gel cat litter is added to compost as it will not break down.
When buying cat litter make a note of its country of origin - some is transported great distances, for example from China - not good for your "food miles".
